List of Directories for your Hotel Site

Here’s a list of directories where you can list your hotel site. Some are free, while others are paid directories. We’ll attempt to keep this list updated, but if you happen to know a resource that is not listed, please leave a suggestion on the comments section of this page. If your site is new or doesn’t have many recommendations elsewhere, directories will help you get started. Some are relatively expensive, but reputable directories can help you market your brand and, in some cases, attract very targeted traffic.

In alphabetical order:

All Web Hotels – FREE – A worldwide directory of hotels run by friends of Free listings include direct email to your hotel, direct WWW link, unlimited images, interactive map, regional photos, and a complete profile of your hotel including detailed descriptions of floors, ammenities and rooms. Best of all: a free hosted booking engine charging 0% commission on successful bookings.

Best of the Web – U$ 299.95/YEAR – One of the oldest online directories. If your site is brand new and you need a push to get your brand known it may be worth your investment. If your budget is short, do prioritize Yahoo! or listings.

DMOZ – FREE – The Web’s nr. 1 free and open directory. A starting point for Google crawlers(Googlebot) – the DMOZ data is also mirrored across several directories, including Google’s own. Currently sponsored by AOL and run by voluntaries. It is very difficult getting listed on DMOZ, but well worth the 5 minutes it takes to submit your site. Make sure to read up on DMOZ-listing tips before submitting. Editors have an internal forum where they’ll discuss your site before listing, so if you try several times your site will be permanently blacklisted. Implement 100% of their guidelines, submit once and be patient – it can take months to years to get listed. Yes, unfortunately we did say years….. – U$ 299.00/YEAR – A business-oriented directory for US-based businesses. Content is syndicated across several partner sites. If you’ve got the budget, the average monthly $25 are probably worth the investment. – U$ 39.99 – A general web directory, has been around forever. Useful if you’re just getting started promoting your online hotel presence.

Yahoo! Directory – U$ 299.00/YEAR – THE commercial directory. While most search engines will not admit it, the Yahoo! directory has everything it takes to be a starting point for web crawlers. The yearly U$ 299 and Yahoo!’s strict quality controls help keep the directory clean.

You should not expect a return from investment in directory listings in immediate traffic or bookings. Directories are a mid to long term investment, mainly in branding and online reputation building. A business that has been listed in reputable directories will tend to receive more trust, as most directories are human-reviewed. Do not invest in directory listings solely for the links – you will be frustrated.

We will expand this list as we find more resources. Unfortunately, ethical hotel directories are very hard to find. You should not engage in automated link exchanges and massive link farms. Some hotel link exchanges can have up to 100 pages of links – these will not bring you any traffic whatsoever and will likely earn you some type of penalty on most engines.
